The First Lady of the Republic and President of the National Commission for the Commemoration of the V Centennial of the Discovery of the Pacific Ocean, Marta Linares de Martinelli, attended the official presentation of the First Biennial of the South in Panama 2013, "In which artists will take over the City ", organized by the City of Panama, as part of the activities allusive to the 500th Anniversary of the Discovery of the South Sea. The presentation of this art and culture project that will be held officially from April 15 to May 15, will gather about 300 artists from 65 countries in Panama, nationals and foreigners, the Mayor Roxana Mendez said, adding that the 40 percent of the works to be presented at the Biennial will be donated to the city. She also said the city will be turned into a great artistic showcase, being dressed-up with sculptures, murals, paintings, films and photographs in a national and international contemporary gathering in which the artists will take over the city. Mendez stressed the importance of this event which for the first time will be held in Panama, and commented on the enthusiasm with which the artists have adopted the city looking for spaces to express themselves. The Biennial of the South in Panama is a project with international profile that seeks to be linked to the cultural agenda of this country in the interest of stimulating cultural development and of promoting new trends in the visual arts. During the event the organizers anticipate that the national and foreign artists will take over the city with the display of their works. Among the Panamanian artists confirmed to the event are among others: Olga Sinclair, Aristides Ureña, José Luis Rodríguez, Gladys Sevillano and Rita Adames. As one of the main attractions of the Biennial the exhibition of 61 pieces from maestro Fernando Botero's latest exposition, entitled “The Viacrusis” will be presented. The Biennial will present exhibitions in its main venues with drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos, installations, murals and interactive workshops aimed at the audience and the community in general. Present at the event were the Biennial adviser, Luz Botero; the director of the Museum of Antioquia, Ana Piedad Jaramillo; the curator from Spain, José María Díaz Maroto; sponsors, council members and special guests.
