THE BIENNIAL OF THE SOUTH IN PANAMA
As part of the celebration of the Fifth Centennial of the Discovery of the Mar del Sur (South Sea), the First Biennial of the South in Panama 2013 will commence: "Summoning Worlds", an international project that intends to link up with the cultural agenda of this country, with the intention of stimulating cultural development and promoting new trends of the visual arts.
This first edition of the Biennial aims to bring together different points of view regarding artistic production: of its authors, of the institutions and of different audiences.
The Biennial will be a vital action field of for the recognition, fostering and encouragement of artistic creativity and for the promotion new trends of the visual arts in the cultural and urban environment of this Central American region, transforming in a certain manner the city's landscape and its scenarios, actually involving the spectators in a constant dialogue and interaction with these structural practices.
Such interventions shall be oriented towards ludical and interactive processes, to work projects involving the community, towards proposals of access to technology and to present forms of communication in a temporary habitat of artistic experiences.
Taking advantage of the geological suitability of the host country, national culture and art shall be highlighted, winning the right of initiative amongst the educational circles' voices, in this manner developing the didactic vision of local residents.
Mindful of uniting heritage and cultural tradition, the Mayor of Panama and Luz Botero, Arts and Cultural Development Advisor of the City, have taken on the challenge of creating and implementing a platform that will integrate an Organizing Committee , Support Committees and an International Curatorial Committee.
Those selected will reflect on the relationship between four topics such as Violence, Economy, Water, and Travel, established by a jury with a high degree of expertise and aptness in each of the specific areas of involvement at hand for this summon.
Making use of the host nation's convenience, a formal invitation has been extended to the Embassies, their representatives, and to officials of each country, as well as to Private Companies and other International Organizations in order to involve them in this event, which will generate a high level of publicity for the artists.
Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, 500 years ago, discovered for mankind the Mar del Sur (South Sea). Therefore, today we can sight places, that when intervened, will bring to the world new notions and new spaces to meet with constructive creativity and culture.
